App Store subscriptions finally arrive
You may have noticed that Apple have finally released details of the App Store’s new built in subscription system and it’s pretty fair to say that opinions are divided.
One the one hand the publishers are very unhappy because a) Apple won’t give them subscriber info without consent from the user and b) Apple want to take their 30% cut from in-app subscriptions. There’s talk of legal action and words like ‘blackmail’ being bandied about so we’ll just have to see where that goes…
On the other hand, pundits that aren’t publishers are very happy with Apple for exactly the same reasons: a) Apple won’t give publishers your subscriber info without your consent and b) the fact that you can purchase and manage your subscriptions from within the app/iTunes environment makes your life much easier. No having to go to publisher’s websites and mess about with credit card details and if and when the publisher changes the price of your subscription you’ll be alerted by Apple.
Anti-Apple protesters claim that Apple are just doing it for the money. Pro-Apple supporters claim it’s because Apple take a user-centric view of things and put us first.
I think the great thing about Apple is that both those statements are true – they can have their cake and eat it too.
